I went for a run on Thursday. Well, I go for a run almost every day. But Thursday's run was eventful. Well, every run is eventful in some way (like this morning for example - someone had taken their precious time to lovingly create a giant penis out of rocks - head down to the seawall across from the Granville Island houseboats if you want proof - you sickos!). Thursday's run, however, had an extra something special about it. It was one of those runs where I just wanted to shout "Yes!" and "I love Mother Nature!" at every turn. I know Phil would have loved that. Seriously though, it doesn't get much better than a seawall run when the weather is beautiful. Spring is just around the corner. I can feel it in my bones and can see it in the blossoms that are starting to pop up everywhere. On Thursday I wasn't the only one who felt this way. As I ran I observed (as I often do), and my observations formed themselves into little pieces of poetry in my mind. I'd like to try to recreate those words now, in honour or Mother Nature, the coming of Spring, and the beauty that we are lucky enough to see every day in Vancouver. So here goes:
Out come the fingers which,
No longer burdened by mittens
Can grasp other fingers on other hands and say I love you
Out come the toes which,
No longer burdened by shoes
Can wriggle and scrunch their way into the comforting sand
Out come the tops of heads which,
No longer burdened by toques
Can take in the warmth of the loving sun and feel at peace
Out come the dogs who,
Chased by humans,
Can chase the birds who chase people's picnic samplings
Out come the blossoms which,
No longer bundled tight in their protective leaves
Can say hello to the runners passing by
Out come the runners who,
No longer battling high winds and sideways rain
Can run with ease and say hello back
Out come the smiles which,
No longer stifled by chapped lips and high collars
Can light up the seawall with power equalled to the sun
No longer burdened by mittens
Can grasp other fingers on other hands and say I love you
Out come the toes which,
No longer burdened by shoes
Can wriggle and scrunch their way into the comforting sand
Out come the tops of heads which,
No longer burdened by toques
Can take in the warmth of the loving sun and feel at peace
Out come the dogs who,
Chased by humans,
Can chase the birds who chase people's picnic samplings
Out come the blossoms which,
No longer bundled tight in their protective leaves
Can say hello to the runners passing by
Out come the runners who,
No longer battling high winds and sideways rain
Can run with ease and say hello back
Out come the smiles which,
No longer stifled by chapped lips and high collars
Can light up the seawall with power equalled to the sun
And there it is. My little offering of love for the sun and the water and the aliveness (that is totally a word right?) that comes along with the start of Spring (lets ignore the fact that it doesn't technically start for another month or so). Yesterday I went out with sunglasses AND an umbrella - a sure sign of Spring.
And one more thing... I actually did take both of these pictures while running the seawall (different days, equal beauty!)
Stay tuned for my February post - coming soon! Goal halfway completed : )
